Objectives Within the Understand phase of this work, three key work packages are envisaged: Status of the current methodology Fundamental Engineering and Physics Review Solution requirement and specification. Noting that this project is the first of three proposed phases which are collectively intended to identify and confirm the feasibility of solutions which will facilitate completion of Cadent’s resin-based pipe replacement programme, a report will be produced by Steer Energy, and approved by Cadent, to include the following key deliverables: Overview of current methodologyWork carried out as part of the physics and engineering reviewSolution requirementsSolution specificationRecommended ways forward. Upon successful completion of this phase, Cadent will then determine whether to continue with the further two phases of the overall proposal - Create and Prototype & Validate - as described above.
Abstract Cadent is seeking to utilise technologies which can deploy resin-based materials in both gas mains and services to create a homogenous, fully structural, method of replacing our steel / iron legacy network. A series of NIA-funded projects, undertaken in the period 2014-17, has achieved significant progress in many key areas, enabling the progress of some solution components to TRL levels 5/6. However, there are several areas in which technical challenges still remain and no technically or commercially viable solutions have yet been identified. One of the most significant of these is overcoming the physical difficulties in deploying a resin-based pipe replacement material in certain areas of the host pipe, in particular, swept bends and elbow joints. Cadent believes it is necessary to utilise expertise in other industry sectors and leverage studies undertaken in academic institutions to ensure that all possible options are explored and an efficient, consistent and cost-effective solution is identified and, if necessary, further refined for commercial use in the gas industry. As part of its recent strategic review of its resin-based mains replacement programme, Cadent has identified Steer Energy as an organisation with the required industry knowledge, understanding of the issues to be addressed, and the relationships across business sectors and academia, to enable a full and effective investigation to be undertaken. It is envisaged that any solution suppliers identified during this work will ultimately join the existing collaboration team to deliver a commercial solution for the industry.Note : Project Documents may be available via the ENA Smarter Networks Portal using the Website link above
